Common Grounds for Iran-Afghanistan Cooperation

In a press conference, the Iranian Minister of Communication and Information Technology, accompanied by Abdul Razaq Vahidi, the Afghan Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology, referred to the numerous common grounds between their respective countries, stating that: “Common religion, history and culture are the best capital and support for both governments and nations, and these interrelations result in expanding cooperation in various sectors including post services, telecommunication and information technology.”

The ICT’s Public Relation reports that Dr. Vaezi described his meeting with the Afghan delegation as helpful and productive, and included: “We discussed and exchanged information on many subjects during this meeting.”

He underscored the policies of Dr. Rouhani’s government in giving priority to Iran’s neighbors, including Afghanistan, and added that: “Fortunately, the political relationship of the two countries is at its best level.”

In continuation, Dr. Vaezi mentioned the positive cooperation between the two countries and the considerable presence of Afghan guests in Iran, expressing that: “A great volume of our external traffic is with Afghanistan and through further negotiations, we shall act to facilitate this communication for establishment of direct and quality connections, and with the lowering of the tariffs, of course.”

The ICT Minister underlined the successful presence of Iranian companies in Afghanistan, describing Iran’s hardware and software capabilities, and said: “We have agreed to continue our cooperation with the same pace and in this regard, to better present the potentials of Iranian companies, a meeting has been arranged with the Iranian private sector this very afternoon.”

He referred to various cooperation areas such as Persian software and applications, research and development, postal services cooperation and GNAF system, and reported of the establishment of five committees for e-governance and e-services, telecommunication infrastructure and networks, research and development, regulatory, and post services.”

Dr. Vaezi included that: “The parties have agreed that the five committees shall discuss and negotiate regarding the desired topics, and eventually the outcomes of these committees will be incorporated in a compilation committee.”

Emphasizing that there are plenty of opportunities for cooperation in the ICT sector, he expressed confidence that the ICT cooperation document shall be signed by both parties on this visit.
